A tale of two dad's

On March 28, 2014 I thought my world ended. Dan died just 5 days shy of our 10th wedding anniversary. I always knew it would happen - after all he was born with Cystic Fibrosis and he had a double lung transplant. I knew when I agreed to marry him that I was agreeing to become a young widow. How many young brides read blogs of widows and widowers? I did. Of course I hoped that he would beat all the odds, but as a science teacher I knew what I was getting into. I loved Dan and wanted to marry him - regardless of how long our time together would last. However, I was not prepared for what losing Dan would do to our family - specifically Shane who had just turned 5 18 days before Dan's death and Maddie who was just 2 1/2. In grieving the loss of my best friend, I also had to grieve the loss of a dad for Shane and Maddie. While I had entered into my relationship with Dan with my eyes wide open - Shane and Maddie never signed up for a life without a dad. I would sit on my kitchen floor and sob silently as I pictured all of their future Father's Days, daddy-daughter dances, T-ball games, birthdays, and average days spent without a dad. Dan was a tremendous dad and he loved his kids more than anything in the world. He left a million memories, but I knew those would not be enough. Dan's family promised to step in for our kids and they stepped up in many ways, but nothing can replace the daily presence of a man who loves you more than he does himself. After Dan being so sick for a year, I was so lonely and wanted someone special in my life again. They say those with great marriages tend to be willing to date sooner and I was ready after a few months. Dan left me with his blessing to move on and he wanted me to do so "quickly." I used to get mad when he would tell me that, never realizing how much it would mean to me to know he was more than ok with that happening. I started to go on a few dates, never letting anyone meet my children. My friends promised Dan would send the right guy my way. I laughed. However, all of my doubt went out the window when I met Alex. After talking to him on the phone for over 2 hours, I learned he grew up just blocks from Dan - they went to the same elementary school! They did not know each other because Dan, who was the youngest in his family, was 10 years older than Alex, who was the oldest in his family. Something told me Alex was different than the other men I had met (who by the way were all nice) and I made plans to see him without lining up a babysitter (something I had never done before!) Thankfully my friend Anna watched the kids and Alex and I had an amazing date. I knew on that date that I met my next husband. It sounds crazy, but I knew. I let him meet the kids casually at my block party on date 3. That was when I was 100% sure that Alex was right not only for me, but for the three of us. He instantly clicked with Shane and Maddie and they fell for him as hard as I did. After 5 months of dating, he unofficially moved in (his stuff came 6 weeks later). With Alex here permanently, Shane and Maddie gained a dad back. Do not get me wrong, Alex is not Dan. He is not like in Dan in any way except that he loves Shane and Maddie fiercely. We are not trying to replace Dan. Dan was Dan and Alex is Alex. Dan is discussed all of the time in this house. Dan's family is still a huge presence in all of our lives. Having Alex as a dad, just means my children are lucky enough to have two men who they can call Dad (something Shane pointed out to me.) Two men who would do anything for them. They are blessed to have Alex because not only does he love me and them, but he also is confident and strong enough to not be threatened by the legacy of Dan. Alex works from home on days there are special events at the kids school so he can attend them, he takes them out on special dates, he brushes teeth, reads bedtime stories, gives snuggles, taught Shane to love Star Wars, taught Maddie to ride a bike, calms Maddie down when she is being a "threenager" and has made our family complete. On this Father's Day my children will remember the great man that was there when they were brought into this world and they will celebrate the one who will be by their side as they navigate through it. Alex has been the answer to my prayers - in him I found true love and a best friend and a father to my children. It takes a special man to be willing to love children that are not his blood children. I found a quote a while back that said, "A Daddy isn't defined as the man who makes the child, but rather a man who extends his hands and time to help raise the child! Blood doesn't always make you a daddy. Being a daddy comes from the heart..." How lucky am I that I have children smart enough to recognize and appreciate their fortune in having two spectacular men they can love and honor on Father's Day. Happy Father's Day in heaven Dan! I know you are smiling down on us! And Alex, happy 1st Father's Day! You are an incredible man and father! We love you!

Spring & Summer fun! Finally caught up!

Happy Passover! I know it is crazy to write this in July, but better late than never! March was an exceptionally busy month for us this year! Besides Shane's birthday, we had early Passover and Easter - both falling in the month of March. Passover was at Aunt Joan's and was a great time!

Shane got to "read" the 4 questions - with a little help from Daddy!

The famous plagues were all present! We all love a seder led by Brad!

Maddie enjoyed all of the food! No surprise there!
Shane loved the matzah ball soup!
Andrea and Brad missed Shane's party, but the brought him an awesome castle puzzle! He had fun putting it together with Jenny AKA Carly! Now he puts it together without any help!
Shane and Jenny! One day he will call her Carly!

Maddie loved playing with Andrea and Carly!
I love this one!
You may or may not know that I love Pinterest! I mean it may be the greatest website ever! I get all of my cake ideas there, tons of recipes, even block party ideas. Well, before Easter a new way to dye eggs was trending on pinterest. It involved shaving cream and food coloring. It was supposed to be super easy and mess free. It was easy and somewhat mess free, but it did not work well at all. Oh well! The kids still loved trying!

After dying the eggs & getting a bath it was time to leave out some carrots for the Easter bunny!
He must have got the carrots because he came and dropped off presents! Notice his giant pawprints on the floor!

Shane's basket!
Maddie's basket!
Shane got a bike! The Easter bunny got the size wrong so we took it back later for a Jake & the Neverland Pirates bike.
Surprise, surprise! Maddie got a doll from the Easter bunny!
Shane got some classic movies! We are reading the book Charlotte's Wen now so the movie was a good accompaniment to his first read aloud chapter book. I adore that book!

My two bunnies!
I love this picture!
Easter this year was a little chilly! Here Jami & Daniel tried to stay warm!
Edwaard kept Maddie moving!
The Easter egg hunt was soooo much fun this year! Cathy brought over a million stuffed eggs! Here Charlotte enjoyed getting her stash!
Julia and Alex also got in on the fun!

We should have taken a before picture! The lawn was literally crawling with eggs!
Shane and Alex had very full baskets!

We did not let the bigger kids in on the fun until the younger ones had a little head start! Lilli and Charlie still found plenty of eggs!

I love this one of Maddie!

Daniel did not miss out on the fun either!
I love this shot of Jami's three cuties!
 Sibling love!

Maddie kissing Daniel goodbye!
Maddie and Alex!
Maddie and Papa Judy!

There is Shane! I feel like he must have been too busy playing for pictures!
After Easter we returned Shane's bike for a slightly smaller one and he was off! He loves his Jake bike!

Maddie wanted a bike too!
Dan filmed the first day of riding!

Dan took Shane to meet some hockey person - not sure who! Update - apparently this is Shane with Denis Savard.

My loves on Mother's Day!
Papa Carolyn opening her presents!

Papa Judy opening hers!
Me opening mine!

A bracelet from my parents!
The kids and Papa Carolyn - not the best shot. Maddie really needed a diaper change!

Goodbye hugs!
We went out for frozen yogurt that night! Maddie loves sorbet!

Me and my babies!
We all had fun at the annual Space Night at Eberhart!

Alex and Cathy came along! Look at these goofy friends!

The end of May meant an end of the year performance at Kensington! Shane's first show! It was farm themed and my little farmer was just adorable!

The first weekend in June was Farm Fest at the Children's Farm in Palos Park. Maddie was super cautious of the animals and wanted to have nothing to do with petting many of them. She did warm up to them from a distance! Isabelle & Madelynn (and their mom) came along. Shane is always happy when he is with Isabelle!

Dan & Maddie waving at the horses from a distance while Shane, Isabelle & Madelynn petted the goats and pigs!
Isabelle & Madelynn petting a baby chick!

Shane and a baby chick!

Ummm, Shane - you have to hold the chick so it does not fall! Do not worry, no animals were harmed in the shooting of these pictures!

Daddy trying to convince Maddie to touch a baby chick!
Shane loved riding the horse - he was a natural! Maddie screamed hysterically when Dan approached the horse with her!

Kim, Madelynn, Madison & me on the hayride!
Shane & Isabelle on the hayride!
The first week in June also meant the end of Shane's first year of preschool. He loved Kensington and really bonded with all of his teachers! His new teacher (after Mrs. Duesenberg left) was Ms. Cariosia and he learned a lot from her! He really bonded with the assistant in the room Mrs. Connelly. We are all hoping those are the faces he sees when he returns in the fall! Here he is on his last day with Ms. Carioscia!
And with Mrs. Connelly!

This summer Shane is playing two sports! Soccer and T-ball. He loves both! Soccer is once/week and T-ball is twice/week. I may try and sign him up for fall soccer. He actually seems to be understanding the game and he likes it! We even went out and bought shin guards because his coach suggested that they take getting used to wearing so it was better to get him used to them now. As I type this, Shane is getting dressed for his last day of soccer!

We have one week of T-Ball left! Shane was on the maroon team with Isabelle this year. He likes T-Ball, but he likes Isabelle more! One day we saw him and Isabelle hugging on the sideline and then Kim and I started talking. A few minutes later we heard someone yell, "Hey, there is no kissing in baseball!" Who do you think they were talking to?
Shane had Papa Irwin & Papa Judy come out to his games many times. We usually got a bite to eat after!

We have spent a lot of time outside this summer! I have been biking with the kids and they love playing in the backyard with their slip and slide! Maddie and Shane kind of army crawl down the slip and slide! Dan thought he would show them how it is really done! Thankfully he did not kill himself in the process!
My little monkeys in the bike trailer!
And outside playing!

We love hanging out with Jami & her kids! It is so neat to have my kids play with her kids knowing that Jami and I have known each other forever. I have known her my whole life! It is especially cool that Maddie and Daniel are almost exactly a year apart and Jami and I are a year apart! Earlier this summer we met at Pirate's Cove.

Charlie was such a good sport! Pirate's Cove is definitely geared more toward younger kids, but he never complained!
Maddie loves Charlie!
I love this shot of Lilli!
Shane loves slides!
Daniel wasn't quite sure!
The paddle boats are so much fun!

I love this picture of Daniel & Maddie!
The train!

Maddie had a blast running around! She is such a happy girl!
Lilli and Charlie did some impressive climbing on the rock wall!

Everyone is looking here, but Shane! There is always someone who doesn't cooperate!

Cathy & I visited Santa's Village in June. I have so many memories of Santa's Village from my childhood that I was so excited it has reopened. They have many original rides and some rides from Kiddieland! It was awesome! Here are the kids with Santa!
Here we are on the hot air balloon ride. Shane sat across from Maddie and I.
Cathy & Alex in their balloon!
Shane and Maddie love rides!

Here are Alex and Shane on the kiddie ferris wheel.
These were from Kiddieland! I probably rode on them as a child & now my kids got to! I love it!!!
Here is Maddie! They only have a few cars designed for the little ones so she had to sit with this little boy. She made friends quickly!

Here are Alex & Shane on some flying jets!

The new Santa's Village is an Azoosment park. We loved feeding the animals! Well, by we I mean Shane & Alex - Maddie wanted NOTHING to do with them!
Another fun ride!

Here we are waiting for the famous firetruck ride! I so loved this ride when I was a kid. When they closed Santa's Village they sold this truck to a park district that was planning on using it for parades. However, they never did and the new owners of the park were able to buy it back! It was awesome to watch the kids putting out the fire like I used to do so many years ago!

I took the kids in the fun house!
We rode the carousel for our last ride!

We could not leave without saying one last goodbye to Santa!
Dan's mom had Grandma and me class with Shane this June! Here are some pictures of them enjoying the day!

For Father's Day this year Shane and Maddie made Dan an apron and we did Dad and Papa pictures where each child held the letter D or A for dad and P or A for papa. They came out really nice!
Here are the kids with my dad on Father's Day!

If you build it, he will come! At the end of June we took a mini trip to Dyersville, Iowa. Dan always wanted to play catch with his kids there. Dan and I had been there long before children so it was time to return. I gave the trip to Dan for his 10 year transplant anniversary! We arrived around 4 and Dan made sure to pack baseball hats, gloves, bats, and a T. The kids loved running around!

Dan and Shane ran the bases many times!
So did Maddie!
The boys! Awwwww!!!!

Maddie wanted in on the baseball action!

She looks like a pro here!

But maybe not here! Regardless, she is adorable!
The one thing Dan wanted to do was play catch with Shane here. It reminded him of his dad and the memories he had of playing ball with him - just like in the movie!
The famous house in the background with Shane swinging away!

My cuties!
At 6:00 we headed to the Super 8 in Dyersville. Here Shane is with his awesome suitcase from Cathy, Dan & Alex! He insisted on taking it in himself!
The next morning we had breakfast and headed back out to the movie site. This time Maddie got in on the game of catch!
There was more hitting!
And more running!
And more catch! I actually got Shane that t-shirt at the end of the previous day from the gift shop - it says, "Hey Dad, Wanna have a catch?"

Talking baseball strategy on the mound!
The famous bleachers from the movie!

Dan and the ghost players! Shane was feeling super shy - he is behind Dan?
Shane is still behind Dan!
Here he is!
After we left Dyersville we headed to LeClaire, Iowa for lunch and a trip to Antique Archeology (the store from the History Channel show American Pickers.) We accidentally discovered the town and that the store was there on our way to Dyersville. Maddie needed to be changed and we were hungry so we pulled over in LeClaire. The town is adorable, right on the Mississippi River. After we had lunch, we stopped for gas and I saw a ton of people on a ridge taking pictures. I thought some wildlife had been spotted, but no - it was the Antique Archeology store and people were taking pictures of the filming going on! We decided to stop back there on our way home and check out the store. Dan even had a chance to meet one of the pickers - Mike Wolfe.

We come home from Iowa and turned around and headed out to Summerfest! It was so much fun! Dan's mom joined us again and we all had a great time! Shane could not wait to ride the sky glider from one end of the park to the other.

The splash pad there is a favorite with the kids - here is Maddie all suited up to go! I love this one of her and Papa Carolyn!
Now the real fun begins.

After the splash pad, it was time for Shane to rock out! They have a tent with real instruments and karaoke. Shane wanted to use the drums, so he started out there! Dan and Maddie watched from behind him!

After the drums, Shane had a chance to sing! Guess what the song was? Call Me Maybe! Shane's favorite from last summer!

Look at how curly Maddie's hair is in the back!
After singing and playing in the park it was time for Papa Carolyn to make a tie dye t-shirt of her own!

The kids got balloon monkees!

Then it was time for dinner!

I love this one of Dan & his mom!

We stayed in Milwaukee for the night and drove out to see Joey for breakfast the next morning. We all adore him!

I love this one!

We headed home from Summerfest and then celebrated the 4th of July (on the 3rd of July). Plainfield had Touch a Truck and fireworks! My parents, Dan's mom, and Betty came over for dinner and then we all headed over to the festivities. We were so happy that they had all of this on the 3rd since we took the kids to the Goo Goo Dolls concert at Ravinia on the 4th.
These are the brownies Shane & I made to celebrate!
Here Shane and Maddie are in the fire truck.

In a police car!
Dan's mom even tried the police motorcycle! She looks great!
Then it was the kids turn!

I have no idea why Maddie is wearing a helmet in this car???
There was a fun play area for the kids set up!
I love these two!

Almost firework time!

Shane hanging out with Papa Carolyn & Betty!
 And with Papa Judy!
We are so lucky to live near such great friends! Shane and Maddie love Isabelle and Madelynn!

Shane and Maddie loved the fireworks!

The next day was the Goo Goo Dolls/Matchbox 20 show at Ravinia. Dan & I had never been there before, but we really had a great time! You can't see the show at all from the lawn and there are no screens, but we heard the music and the volume was perfect for the kids! Shane & Maddie loved it and sang and danced the night away! Here we are having our picnic dinner! Thanks Papa Carolyn for the table! It worked out perfectly!

On July 12th Dan & I headed to Soldier Field for Bon Jovi! We had a blast!

Daniel & Shauna both have birthdays on the same day - thankfully their parties were on different days! Daniel's first birthday was awesome! Shane and Maddie had a blast playing in the pool!

I made an Elmo fruit plate!
Look at the smash cake Jami made for Daniel! I can't rotate it, but you get the point! It was awesome!
Jami & I made the fondant pieces and then Jami decorated the cake perfectly!
The birthday boy!!!!!! I think he loved his cake! We love you Daniel!
Shane's favorite teacher Mrs. Duesenberg asked if we wanted to meet for ice cream! Did Shane ever!!!! He adores her! We all love her!
Auntie Debbie came over to watch Shane play T-Ball. She is the best!
On July 20th we celebrated Shauna's second birthday! Shane and Maddie had so much fun! Look at Shane & Dan on the Go-Carts!
Shane and Maddie love the bounce houses!

Shane even tried his hand at rock climbing!
The kids favorite activity was probably dancing on the dance floor! So cute!
Here is the birthday girl! We love you!
After the party we headed over to Aunt Joan's house! Shane and Maddie just adore her and Cy!

If a birthday party and a visit with Aunt Joan & Uncle Cy were not enough, we decided to top off the evening with a trip to Plainfield Fest! The kids loved the rides and the Italian Ice! Dan also loved the Italian ice! Here are my loves and their red faces!

After Italian Ice it was time to try out some rides!

Papa Judy & Papa Irwin came out to the July 22nd T-Ball game and then we had dinner at Subway! Maddie insisted my dad hold her baby doll during dinner. If he put the doll down, she protested loudly. It was very funny!
Papa Judy and the kids!

Tuesday, July 23rd was Shane's last day of soccer. The kids played the parents and it was so cute! I think Shane has learned a lot of soccer skills this year and really likes it!

T-Ball is winding down (the 29th is the last day)! Here Maddie and Madelynn watched the game together! they are such cute friends!
Aunt Jorie came out to watch Shane play T-Ball and then we all had pizza at Fox's! The kids LOVE Aunt Jorie! Oh, and Maddie can say Aunt Jorie already!
